Playing the Sefton Links in May: Conditions, Availability and What to Book Now

Playing the Sefton Links in May: Conditions, Availability and What to Book Now

7 May 2026 6 min readBy Damian Roche

May is the best month on the Sefton Coast for golf. Firm fairways, long evenings, the courses in their best spring condition. Here's what to expect and what to book before the Open crowds arrive.

May is when the Sefton Coast courses come into their own. The winter mud has gone. Fairways are firming up. The rough is growing out which means the courses are playing as intended rather than as a function of drainage. Daylight is close to maximum, which means early morning tee times and late evening rounds are both viable. And the July chaos around The Open hasn't arrived yet.

If you're planning a Sefton Coast golf trip in 2026, May is the correct month to target. Here's what each of the five courses is doing in May and what you need to know to book properly.

Course Conditions in May

Links fairways in May are typically at their best for the year. Spring growth has established, the fairway grasses have been at their maintenance programme for two or three months, and the sand-based soil drains freely. The result is firm, fast turf that rewards a lower ball flight and proper course management. You can run the ball onto greens rather than attacking from height every time.

The rough is the variable. On a links course in May, the rough is at intermediate height - longer than April, not yet at the summer maximum. Hillside and Birkdale both have rough that genuinely penalises a wayward shot by May. At Southport and Ainsdale the rough is characterful but not punishing. West Lancashire plays very open in May. Formby Golf Club has wooded sections that change the rough equation significantly.

The greens on the better courses tend to be at or near their peak in May. Royal Birkdale's greens are consistently excellent. Hillside similarly. The smaller clubs can vary depending on their greenkeeping resources. On any Sefton Coast course in May, fast greens are the norm and putting is a skill you'll use.

Availability in May vs July

This is worth understanding clearly. In July, specifically from 7 July onwards, The Open Championship week consumes significant accommodation capacity across the Sefton Coast. Many visitors who can't get course time at Birkdale during that window will be looking at Hillside or Southport and Ainsdale as alternatives. Availability tightens.

In May, there is no such pressure. Visitor green fee slots are available at all five courses with reasonable notice. Royal Birkdale requires 3+ months advance booking at all times of year. But Hillside, S&A and West Lancashire are all bookable in May with 4-6 weeks notice in most cases. Formby Golf Club visitor access is generally the most flexible of the five.

The practical implication: if you want to play all five courses in 2026, doing so in May gives you the best combination of conditions, daylight, availability and pre-Open pricing.

What to Book Now

  • Royal Birkdale: book immediately if you don't have a tee time. Visitor slots are released on a rolling basis. Handicap certificate required.
  • Hillside: 4-8 weeks ahead for May slots. Contact the pro shop directly. Green fee around £100-150.
  • Southport and Ainsdale: accessible and excellent value. 2-4 weeks notice usually sufficient for May weekdays. Weekends book faster.
  • West Lancashire: visitor access is reasonable. Book 3-4 weeks ahead. The most elemental links experience on the coast.
  • Formby Golf Club: the most flexible for visitors. Worth combining with a walk in the pinewoods if you have time.

Playing Golf Around The Open (July)

If you're planning to attend The Open at Royal Birkdale (12-19 July) and want to play golf as part of the trip, May or early June is a better target for your rounds than Open week itself. The course management around Royal Birkdale during championship week changes how the course plays - rough is grown out to maximum, pins are in testing positions, and the general atmosphere is that of a major championship rather than a visitor green fee.

Play in May when the courses are in their best condition, enjoy the quieter atmosphere, and attend The Open in July for the spectacle. That's the ideal combination if you can manage the two trips.

Green fees, visitor policies, booking contacts and full course reviews for all five Sefton Coast links courses are on SeftonLinks.
