Sefton Coast Golf in Spring: Conditions, Green Fees and What to Expect in April

13 Apr 2026 6 min readBy Damian Roche

April on the Sefton Coast is genuinely one of the best times to play. The courses are quieter, green fees are lower, and the conditions are as good as they get: firm turf, clear air, manageable wind. Here's what to expect.

There is a version of the Sefton Coast golf calendar that everyone knows about: peak summer, Open Championship week, the busiest tee sheets and the highest green fees of the year. And then there's April. Quieter, cheaper, and in many ways the better golf. Here's the honest guide to playing the coast in spring.

Why April works

The links courses on the Sefton Coast are firm and fast in April. Winter rainfall has drained through the sandy subsoil, the ground has hardened, and the ball runs in a way that it doesn't on soft autumn fairways. This is how links golf is meant to feel. The turf is tight. The bounce is real. You can run a 6-iron along the ground from 40 yards short of the green and finish on the putting surface. Most golfers who've only played links in wet conditions don't know this version of the game exists.

April is also pre-peak pricing at most clubs. Green fees at Southport & Ainsdale are at their lower rates before the summer tariff kicks in. Hillside's midweek rates in April are significantly below the July prices. Visitor access is easier: tee sheets aren't full, the pro shop isn't overwhelmed, and you can sometimes book a tee time for next week rather than next month.

What the courses look like in April

The gorse is flowering in April, yellow across the dune ridges. Looks spectacular from an aesthetic point of view and is a complete nightmare from a golf ball perspective. If anything, gorse in April is denser and harder to escape than at other times of year. Play to avoid it, not through it.

Course conditioning in April is good at the main clubs. The greens at Hillside and Royal Birkdale are generally at their most receptive in spring before the summer hardening sets in. You'll still need to land approach shots short and run them on, but the greens will hold a well-struck shot better than they will in July.

The wind in April

April wind on the Sefton Coast averages 15–20mph, which is links golf in moderate conditions. Not the brutal winter winds, not the deceptively calm summer days that make you forget you're on a coastal course. It's manageable if you respect it and catastrophic if you don't.

The standard links wind advice applies more obviously in April than any other month: take more club than you think, flight the ball lower, play for position rather than the flag on exposed holes. The players who struggle most in April wind are those arriving directly from parkland courses where wind hasn't been a factor all winter.

Which courses to prioritise

  • Southport & Ainsdale: the best April choice. Good conditions, reasonable green fees, meal included. Easiest tee time access of the main championship courses.
  • Hillside: the best value April upgrade. Midweek rates in April give you a top-30 England course at one of its most affordable price points.
  • West Lancashire: April conditions are excellent here. The rough is starting to grow but not yet at full summer height. A good window for higher handicappers who want to experience West Lancs at its most manageable.
  • Royal Birkdale: if you want to play it before Open week preparation closes it to visitors (late May/early June), April is the right time to book.
  • Southport Old Links: always accessible, always affordable, and the April turf conditions are as good as they get.

Practical notes for an April trip

  • Layers rather than heavy waterproofs. April mornings can be cold but the afternoon is often fine. Waterproofs in the bag rather than on your back.
  • Check for visitor days before booking. Some clubs have restricted days around Easter and bank holidays.
  • Green fees in April: S&A £65–£85, Hillside £75–£100 midweek, West Lancs £80–£120, Royal Birkdale £320 (unchanged).
  • The Royal Birkdale booking window closes in May or June before The Open. If you want to play it in 2026, April is your last reliable window.
